The term Gibier Leather may be unfamiliar, but it represents our commitment to honoring the over 600,000 boars culled annually, instead of discarding them (95% are still simply discarded). From hide to finished product, every piece is handcrafted, with tanning done by “Yasashii Kawa” in Sumida, Tokyo. The natural curves of the edges actually come from the knife marks left by hunters when the boar hides were removed. “At Hummingbird, we want to honor everyone involved before this Gibier leather reaches you.” With this philosophy, we have created many pieces incorporating these edge curves, and this tote bag is the largest and most remarkable piece in our collection. The collage design evolves over time differently than single-piece leather items. Areas where the leather overlaps will develop a beautiful shine first, creating a rich and unique gradient. The number of wild boars culled each year is increasing, and most of them are discarded.
