The boars were culled in Isahaya City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and their hides were carefully transformed from fur into leather at the Gibier Leather HUMMINGBIRD atelier. The number of wild boars culled each year continues to increase, and sadly, most of their hides are still discarded. These lives were taken out of necessity. At the very least, we wish to honor them by using every part with care and respect. With this belief, each piece is finished entirely by hand. ⸻ About Wild Boar Leather Wild boar leather is known to last over 20 years. In Europe, it is valued as leather that can be passed down to the next generation — so durable that a grandfather’s bag can be remade into a grandchild’s wallet. Despite its strength, wild boar leather is lighter and stronger than cowhide, and is treated as a luxury material alongside ostrich and crocodile leather. In Japan, it was once used for firefighters’ protective hoods. For this piece, we wanted you to fully experience the true character of gibier leather. The design boldly showcases a large natural scar from the boar’s life in the wild, left untouched and displayed across the entire surface. This hide came from a large female wild boar. Seeing a scar nearly 20 cm long, we couldn’t help but imagine a life lived just as fiercely and wildly as any great male boar. The flap features the original natural curved edge created when hunters carefully skin the animal. You will also find clip marks left during the tanning process—traces created when the leather was stretched and fixed by professional tanners. These marks are intentionally preserved as part of the story of the leather. Because we deeply respect the value of life, we create gibier leather pieces from wild boars that would otherwise be discarded. Each pouch carries a fragment of life from a wild boar that once roamed freely in the mountains of Isahaya. The number of culled boars is increasing each year, and most are still discarded. With this in mind, each piece is carefully handmade, honoring the life of the animal to the very end. Wild boar leather is said to last over 20 years. In Europe, it is considered a luxury leather strong enough to pass down through generations. Grandfather’s bag can even be remade into a grandson’s wallet.
