"Gibier leather" may be an unfamiliar term to many people. Every year in Japan, more than 600,000 wild boars are culled to help maintain the balance between wildlife and human communities. Sadly, around 95% of them are still discarded without being utilized. We simply couldn't accept that. With the hope of honoring these lives with dignity,
we began by working with the hides themselves and now handcraft each piece from design to completion. (The vegetable tanning process is entrusted to "Yasashii Kawa" in Sumida, Tokyo, specialists in gentle, plant-based leather tanning.) At the atelier of Gibier Boar Leather HUMMINGBIRD, the hide is carefully transformed from fur into leather by hand. Wild boar culling numbers increase each year in Japan, and most of the hides are discarded. Lives taken out of necessity deserve, at the very least, to be honored until the very end. With that belief, every piece is handcrafted with care and gratitude. Wild boar leather is said to last over 20 years. In Europe, it is valued as a leather “to be passed down to the next generation.” It is lighter and stronger than cowhide, sometimes treasured enough to remake a grandfather’s bag into a grandchild’s wallet. It stands alongside ostrich and crocodile as a luxury leather. Historically in Japan, it was even used for traditional firefighters’ hoods due to its strength and durability. With that intention, each piece is entirely handcrafted. Wild boar leather is said to last over 20 years. In Europe, it is considered lighter and stronger than cowhide and is known as “leather to pass down to grandchildren.” It is strong enough that a grandfather’s bag can be remade into a grandchild’s wallet.
